Mary Ann Mumm
Violin
Mary Ann Mumm made her solo debut with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra at age 15, the first prize recipient of the MSO Young Artists Competition. She continued studies at Indiana University with Josef Gingold and served as his graduate teaching assistant. Other influential teachers include Ivan Galamian, Tadeusz Wronski and Gerald Stanick.
As Assistant Professor of Violin at Northwestern University, Bienen School of Music, Ms. Mumm was the youngest and also the first woman to be appointed to a full time faculty position in the instrumental music department.
Her major orchestral engagements include the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and 17 years with the MET Orchestra. Ms. Mumm performed extensively with the MET Orchestra on international radio and TV broadcasts as well as recordings on Sony and Deutsche Gramophon labels.
Her solo and chamber music collaborations are numerous and include performances with some of the world’s finest orchestra, chamber and solo musicians. Ms. Mumm’s performance in the 2011 world premier recording of the Piano Quintet by Franco Alfano (Naxos) received international praise and 3 Grammy award nominations. An additional world premier recording of the 3 Alfano string quartets (Naxos) was released in 2023 to high acclaim.
Ms. Mumm recently retired from her Violin faculty position at the John J. Cali School of Music, Montclair State University. She continues as a frequent guest artist teacher and competition adjudicator at major musical institutions. During her tenure as President of the American String Teachers Association-NJ, the state was honored with 5 national awards for excellence.
Ms. Mumm serves on the faculty for the Orchestra of the Americas. She is a founding Coordinator and Advisory Board member of the OA Global Leaders Institute and has helped develop their Executive MBA for the Arts program and music education projects in Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South Americas.
Ms. Mumm is very proud of her students, many of whom can be found in major orchestras and teaching institutions throughout the world.
