Hank Landrum

Clarinet

Praised for his “exceptional mastery of the clarinet, effortlessly shown in harsh fortissimo staccatos and soft legato solos” (Tunitemusic), Hank Landrum has dazzled stages across the U.S. and abroad in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings alike. He currently holds the position of Second Clarinet of the Charleston Symphony, as well as Utility Clarinet of the Chicago Sinfonietta. Other orchestral engagements have included guest appearances with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, New World Symphony, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and more. Hank has spent his summers and winters performing with Spoleto Festival USA, Sunflower Music Festival, Buzzard’s Bay Musicfest, the New York String Orchestra Seminar, Aspen Music Festival, the National Repertory Orchestra, and more. Hank has performed with prominent conductors such as Stéphane Denève, Robert Spano, Jonathon Heyward, Karina Canellakis, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Hans Graaf, and Joanne Falletta. He also has performed with distinguished artists such as Emmanuel Ax, Daniil Trifonov, Augustin Hadelich, Tessa Lark, Audra McDonald, and Kristen Chenoweth.

As a soloist, Dr. Landrum has made appearances with both the University of Texas Symphony Orchestra, as the winner of the University Concerto Competition, and the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, performing Copland’s Clarinet Concerto and Crusell’s Clarinet Concerto no. 3 respectively. Furthermore, he has been heard abroad, as a former finalist in the International Clarinet Association’s Young Artist Competition in Oostende, Belgium. As a chamber musician, Dr. Landrum has released music independently and with Ladoga Records. His debut album, Brahms: Clarinet Quintet, along with his latest collaboration, Messiaen: Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps (Quartet for the End of Time), can be heard on Spotify, Apple Music, and all other streaming platforms. 

Committed to cultivating all generations of clarinetists, Dr. Landrum currently holds a competitive private studio in Charleston, South Carolina. Upcoming pedagogical engagements include masterclasses at Florida State University and the University of South Florida. Previously, Dr. Landrum has held the position of Assistant Instructor of Clarinet at the University of Texas at Austin. Hank also holds his Doctoral and Master’s degrees from UT, as well as a Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University. His teachers and mentors have included Jonathan Gunn, Deborah Bish, Joaquin Valdepeñas, Sasha Potiomkin, and Jonathan Holden.
